Of calendars old and new

A joyous Name Day to my little one, Irena! May God grant her many blessed years! Which brings me to a quandary...

I have been, rather unsuccessfully, trying to bridge the gap between the New Calendar this blog began under some years ago and the Old Calendar which I actually follow liturgically. It's an odd thing to have one leg knee-deep in one calendar and the other with its toes still dipped in another.

The thought has come up a few times that I might go "whole hog" into my practiced calendar. It is doubtful to be overly noticeable to most people. I don't plan to hold New Calendar event stories for two weeks, but I also won't be putting little (NC) or (OC) markers on everything.

So, I put it to the readership of this blog to give me their sagacious advice. Would moving this blog to the Old Calendar be unwelcome. Thoughts, please!

  1. Go for it! I appreciate that you will not be marking NC/OC on everything. :-P

  2. So... you must be in ROCOR or the Serb Archdiocese? I am surprised to read this, Padre!

  3. I think that it would be unnecessary. People who do not care about calendars won't understand your markings and people who do understand don't need such help. We are no astronoms...

    1. Really the change will mainly be the daily side icon and the red calendar information at the top.

  4. I think if you're now on the old calendar, your blog should be too. Once we move back to Canada we'll be switching calendars since the OCA parishes in our area are on the Old Calendar. My blog will reflect this since otherwise it seems weird to be celebrating major feast days and not mention them.

  5. I am OCA, though my current parish is GOA, so I'm kinda stuck on the New Calendar. But I am not a big fan of it. If you are on the Old Calendar I'd go with it. My blog has both calendars linked in the sidebar. But I usually post based on the one I use.

We really need to get the calendar issue resolved. That, and the hope of sorting out the jurisdictional issues here in N. America are the only items that seem to justify this long discussed, but never materializing, Pan-Orthodox super synod thingy.

  7. Go for it! It makes sense for you to be blogging according to the calendar you follow.

  8. I'm New Calendar, but I agree - I think it makes the most sense to post according to the calendar that you follow.

  9. I suggest you make your life as complicated as possible. It is the only way to be happy, especially if you are American Orthodox. Simplicity is never a good thing. You need to think about lots more things, because thinking and thinking is the only thing that will save you.

  10. For me, I'm far from home, in a country with no Orthodox service I can attend in English. So I rely a lot on blog posts from around the net, iPhone apps, etc., to keep track of what's up. I don't read your blog every day, but I have it on my Google Reader and try to read it a few times a week if I can. As a ROCOR member, I know what you mean about a foot in one calendar and a foot in the other. None of my friends or family are Orthodox of any kind, so for them, because of Easter and Christmas, New Calendar is better (holidays, phone calls, etc.). I often get confused as to what saint day it is, when a fast starts, etc. I'd welcome some consistency! :)

So, Old Calendar for me would be great. But I'm just happy you're here!
    Blessings.
