Assembly of Bishops for North America to be split in 3

In case you missed this declaration in recent posts below, here is an important decision made while the primates where at the Phanar last week.

(mospat.ru) - In addition, the Primates of the Local Orthodox Churches resolved to change geographical borders of the episcopal assemblies in North and South America: a separate assembly should be established in Canada, while other countries, except the United States of America, will be included in the assembly of South America. Thus, there will be three assemblies of bishops on the continent: in Canada, in the United States of America, and in Latin America.

  1. Good. This is how it should have been to start out.

    1. Bad. It comes as a reward to Met. Sotirios' desire to keep Canada a ghetto.

  2. What does this mean for SCOBA now AOB bodies that have a US/CAN charter? Will there be two OCFs two FOCUSes? What does this mean for bishops who have territory in both Canada and the US? Will they sit on both Assemblies?

  3. I'm assuming that cross-border bishops will have to choose which assembly to sit with (or their metropolitans will tell them), but that eventually there will be no cross-border dioceses.

As a dual citizen of the US and Canada, I can tell you that this is a good decision, though the kinks will take a while to iron out.

    1. Although Canada (and Mexico etc) are separate nations, this doesn't come from that, anymore than the break up of the Greek Archdiocese of North and South America was broken up with the retirement of Abp. Iakovos of blessed memory in the wake of Ligonier.

  4. In Europe bishops take part in works of multiple assemblies.
