Topsy-Turvy, Abp. Demetrios to give STS commencement

(STOTS) - With great joy, the Board of Trustees of Saint Tikhon’s Orthodox Theological Seminary announces that the Commencement Speaker for this year’s 74th Annual Commencement will be His Eminence, the Most Reverend Archbishop DEMETRIOS, Geron of America, and Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in America.

This year’s Graduation will be held at the Outdoor Chapel on the grounds of St. Tikhon’s Monastery, beginning at 1:00 p.m. During the festivities, His Eminence, Archbishop Demetrios, will be the recipient of the Degree, Doctor of Divinity, honoris causa, in recognition of his yeoman service to Orthodox theological education, the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese, the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops in the United States of America, the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, and World Orthodoxy in general.

  1. I think this type of inter-jurisdictional activity is just what we need more of here in the US in order to break down the standoffishness that is all to common for us American Orthodox. I trust (hope) the "topsy-turvy" title was meant to be a humorous jab at this issue rather than to imply that this move is upside down or disorganized.

    1. Oh, for sure. If you've read this blog for any period of time you know that I call for more pan-Orthodox effort at every turn. There are just periods in our history where the idea of the "elder archbishop of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America and Exarch of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans" giving a speech at an OCA seminary would have been ridiculous. This points to a more healthy relationship and I am happy to see it.

    2. I figured as much, but, nonetheless, I do appreciate the clarification. Thanks!
