Bp. Makarios of Christoupolis to head Australian Church

(Romfea) - A new Archbishop of Australia was elected by the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate some time ago.

The Holy Synod unanimously voted for Bishop Makarios of Christoupolis to be the new Archbishop of Australia.

Makarios was born in Heraklion, Crete, in 1973. He studied at the Higher Ecclesiastical School of Athens and the Theological School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He had a Master of Sacred Theology at the University of Boston, a Master of Arts in History of Science at Harvard and a Master of Bioethics at Monash University.

His doctoral dissertation was received and passed with an “Excellent” score from the Medical School of the University of Crete. The work was published under the title, Cloning: Social, Ethical and Theological Components.

Since 2003 he has been teaching at the Higher Ecclesiastical Academy of Heraklion. He has occasionally taught courses at various universities, including Hellenic College, the Medical Schools of the Universities of Crete, Thessaly and Athens.

In May 2015 he was elected First Dean of the Theological Seminar of the Autonomous Church of Estonia.

After many years in priestly positions, on the Easter Sunday of 2008, the Ecumenical Patriarch, Bartholomew appointed him Archimandrite of the Ecumenical Throne at the Phanar.

He served in many senior positions in the Holy Archdiocese of Crete until he was elected bishop.

He founded and runs the Publishing Series “All About Bioethics”, which is under the auspices of the Church Mother of Constantinople.

On April 27, 2015, he was unanimously elected Bishop of Christopoulis by the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

He attended the Holy and Great Synod of the Orthodox Church of Crete in 2016 as a counselor to the Ecumenical Patriarchate Delegation.

  1. Has this guy ever even been to Australia?

At a cursory glance (granted this is from Pravoslavie), it seems Makarios is firmly in the Ukraine/Constantinople camp, I'm guessing this gives us a preview of what we will get in America, someone who is out of touch with the local culture and pro-Constantinople primacy/Ukraine schismatic

Sounds harsh but it seems inevitable

  2. would not have been an australian, born in australia, educated in australia, and widowed have been a better choice --- following the imposed model, i think the next ecumenical patriarch should be an american born former southern baptist convert - it makes as much sense doesn't it? God Save Us All from ourselves!

  3. The new Abp. has a strong resumé constructing the Estonian Greek Orthodox Church (whatever it’s official name is). He is a veteran of the Fener war against Moscow.

    1. Kind of amazing to me to see this strange confluence between the Phanar and the US/NATO.
