  1. Perhaps the most obvious disaster would be Met. Elpidophoros, he of "Why are all these Xenoi at Holy Cross?" May God grant wisdom and prudence to those making the decision, and to whoever ends up in the position.

  2. I'm not very familiar with Bishop Methodios, but, being American-born at least he will have an idea of what it's like to be Orthodox in America, and I'm sure he will be aware that his flock includes non-Greeks. I can't see how appointing someone who has no clue about American parish life would be at all beneficial.

Not speaking disparaging of Archbishop Demitrios, but, under his watch GOARCH went into a tail-spin while other Orthodox jurisdictions seemed to be fine

  3. IMO Archbishop Demetrios has been a godly leader, maybe a bit too independent for Constantinople's taste, probably more likely to uphold the core of Orthodoxy than any likely successor will be. I don't think hierarchs should be chosen for their money-management skills, but they take the fall when the finances are mismanaged (see Met. Herman of the OCA).
I suspect that the GOA's problems have less to do with Abp. Demetrios' leadership than with a lot of structural problems catching up with the jurisdiction -- a dependence on wealthy donors, a sycophantic treatment of those donors, and the fact that, as the Archdiocese shrinks in committed membership, it will either have to find new sources of income or learn to live on less.

    1. Hopefully the next leader will be a little more down to earth and focus on what the GOA currently is versus the image it wants to potray. I think this is the root of most of its problems.

    2. Met. Herman is a good example of the old adage that the coverup is usually worse than the underlying scandal. Herman inherited a mess from his predecessor Theodosious (Lazar). Unfortunately rather than dealing with the problems, he chose to sweep them under the rug and look the other way at his chancellor's behavior. When questions were raised, he stonewalled and prevaricated. He had to go.

    3. Yet there are still those who defend the ex-priest Kondratick. See Monomakhos.

  4. Well first glance the list at least seems ok....

  5. I'm in the GOA & I'm also sad to see +Demetrios go. He isn't a perfect administrator, but he is a good pastor who seems to put the faith first.

IMO the list is not impressive.

+Methodios is our bishop; a bit ornery at times but he's quite reasonable & prudent.

    I don't know much about +Makarios.

However, +Elpidophoros & +Emannual would be disasters for the GOA as they are too Hellenistic, but the real problem with both of them is the rabid view of Constantinopolitan primacy they both share. I'm not sure if I'll stay in the GOA if some ultra-Hellenistic heretic pushing the Phanar's recent agenda & the debacle in Ukraine down our throats is at the helm of our archdiocese. Lord have mercy.

    1. Timmy, your fears are well-founded and from where I stand, a spy as it were in the house of the Fener, all I hear are expressions of extreme phanariot propaganda. So I am inclined to believe they will send either Hope-bearer or Gott mit Uns precisely FOR their unalloyed phanariotism. I predict such a man’s enthronement will eventuate splitting of the Greek American polity with majority choosing Karloutsos’ Way (nod to Al P.) with a strong anti-Russian tack.
This is what I already hear among Greek clergy so it’s not outlandish.

  6. How about nobody? Would anyone notice? Could save a lot of money with no new building projects like at "ground zero" (what an appropriate name for the new ruin) and a seminary struggling to stay open on his watch. With a watch like his perhaps a snooze is a better term.
