The Roman Catholic doctrine of purgatory is based on the idea that to be fully forgiven or our sins, we must do works of penance. If we do not do enough works of penance to be forgiven of our sins, we must suffer in purgatory before we can enter heaven. Orthodox believe that if we repent of our sins and receive the Sacrament of Confession, our sins are completely forgiven because there is nothing that we can do that can add to what Christ did for us on the Cross. <br /><br />Archpriest John W.
