Eastern Catholicism and the Second Vatican Council

If you want to see how truly complex the relationship is between the Eastern Catholic Churches and the Roman and Orthodox Church, this is the video series to watch. The first video (a talk delivered by Fr. Brian E. Daley, S.J.) is a good history lesson for those unfamiliar with the self-identification of the Eastern Catholics and how Rome and Orthodoxy have seen them. "Uniatism" is a major sticking point right now and will continue to be until some consensus is reached, Greek Catholicism becomes a thing of the past, or Orthodoxy miraculously decides that it's "no big deal."

  1. I would also strongly recommend Bishop Nicholas Samra's talk about Catholic-Orthodox relations in the Middle East, where even apart from the current crisis, the entire situation is rather different than in, say, Ukraine....

    1. Thanks! I'm going to have to check that out. From what I've heard, the persecution in the Middle East has brought many of the the churches (Oriental Communion, Greek Communion, Catholic Communion, Assyrian Church) closer together. Maybe some good can come from evil.

I'd also recommend Geoffrey Hull's 'The Banished Heart'. It has a great perspective on the liturgical problems of Rome and managed to anger both Trads and Libs. The sections where it goes into the Eastern Catholics is heartbreaking.
