St. Nicholas Shrine gets positive attention for a change

New York (GOARCH) - On Western Easter, Sunday April 12th, the renowned CBS news program, 60 Minutes, will showcase the rebuilding of the Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine at the World Trade Center.

The relationship between the Archdiocese and 60 Minutes dates back over a decade, when the late Bob Simon did a groundbreaking interview with His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew that aired in December of 2009.

In the press materials released by CBS yesterday, the rebuilding of Saint Nicholas and reopening is referred to as “both a beacon and some kind of miracle.” In his introduction to the story, 60 Minutes journalist Scott Pelley said, “For Easter, we visit a fortress against time, where art is created to heal one of America’s greatest wounds. It is the story of the resurrection of the only House of Worship destroyed on 9/11.”

His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros commented on the coming broadcast, “We are very moved that the longest running and most prominent television news program in the United States is highlighting our campaign to rebuild Saint Nicholas during this holiest time of the year. With the Friends of Saint Nicholas, whose generosity and energy have restarted this sacred duty, we look forward, by the grace of God and the prayers of the Saint, to opening the doors of the Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine on September 11, 2021.”

The program will air this Sunday evening, April 12th on all CBS affiliates nationwide. A preview and description of the program by CBS are at CBS News.

  1. Greeks have zero shame. How embarrassing for them and the moreso because they don't realize it. This is the public picture of the Church at Pascha. Thanks, guys.

  2. this was a travesty and brought great shame upon us in my opinion

    1) eighty million dollars to build a church --- why not 10 million with 70 million going to franklin graham and supporting samaritan's purse for example -- or doing a similar project in the name of eastern orthodox chistianity

    2) a spanish architect? is there a qualified american? why does the money of americans need to leave the country?

    3) whyn a monastery in greece doing the icons,, isnt there a qualified american iconogrqpher? why send american money outside the country again?

    4) this is touted as an american shrine,, if so, shouldn't it be american desiged, american, built, and american ebellished?

seems to me that someone has forgotten the purpose of the edifice and forgotten that chrisitanity is a faith of charity and that to spend so many millions on a edifice is just criminal and flys in the face of what jesus taught ---- not to mention the scandal regarding the misshandling of the money

also, int it time to shed the ethnic identity,, why is this not being rebuilt as an american orthodox church,, having an accent and being greek is a prerequisite of being a christian or is it?

we have a long way to go to meet franklin graham,,, and that is the tragedy ---

on the otherhand , on fox, there was an excellent program on the plight of the chrstians in bethlehem
