I am sorry that in that second one, not only did Bishop Kallistos replace his firm and forthright essay in the first edition with a wimpy one, but so did Fr. Hopko - and Fr. Hopko went on to make the astonishing claims (a) that the subject of women's ordination is "an open question" for Orthodox Christians, and (b) that the Orthodox Church cannot condemn the pro-WO position until there is a unanimity among Orthodox Christians on the subject. This puzzled me: when did the positions canonized (as opposed to those anathematized) by the Seven Councils ever represent "a unanimity" (or consensus) at the time of the meeting of any one of those councils?William Tighehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16634494183165592707noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-73042886598650075.post-82135191711199611342015-08-06T17:09:04.709-05:002015-08-06T17:09:04.709-05:00Jake,

I certainly don't agree with their ecclesiology BUT they definitely have many, many valid points for everyone to consider.

Met. Kallistos has done many great things for the Church and a host of us are indebted to him for his prodigious labors; but he, similar to one of his 'favs', Origen, has also been 'a trial for the Church' to use the phrase of St. Vincent of Lerins. Lord have mercy. maximushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01086218903799586114noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-73042886598650075.post-11835026175526871672015-08-06T16:31:12.820-05:002015-08-06T16:31:12.820-05:00Putting aside their skewed ecclesiology and outrig...Putting aside their skewed ecclesiology and outright abuse of the term "heretic", the do speak the truth about at least one thing:

Bishop Kallistas WOULD "restore" the female diaconate, might very well go all the way (priests bishops), and if you read his essay in Hopko's book on this subject he deconstructs every understanding as to why we don't have a female clergy/episcopate, and leaves it as a mystery. Any serious reader can see that he is simply stopping there out of obedience, and would go all the way if he could.

During his afternoon tea, he also enjoys mixing european/left wing politics with "moral theology" and seeing how far he can state his universalism without attracting censor.

I pray God grants the english speaking world another "a-list celebrity" on the "Orthodox lecture circuit"...Jakehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16152024447008244670noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-73042886598650075.post-30068005404914202412015-08-06T15:16:44.648-05:002015-08-06T15:16:44.648-05:00NFTU is usually good for comic relief, as long as ...NFTU is usually good for comic relief, as long as you know that's what it is.
