Episcopalians duke it out

Ha ha ha... so she threatens diocese, bishops, parishes, et al. with legal action and removal from the Anglican Communion only to lose a court case and claim First Amendment protection? This gets more silly by the day.

11 April 2008 (ENI) This presiding bishop of the US Episcopal (Anglican) Church has said that a Virginia court ruling in favour of 11 breakaway churches that want to keep church property is a violation of the First Amendment of the US constitution, which guarantees the separation of Church and State.

  2. Why is the Catholic Chuch taking her side in the lawsuit?

  3. Can you point to where they are taking sides, Katherine?

If they are supporting Schori's claim, I suspect it would be on the matter of property ownership rights and the question of WHO owns the bricks and mortar.

If they were using a trusteeship system, that would be one thing. If they were fighting episcopal ownership there would naturally be legal precedent that the Catholic Church would be interested in.

I think it is safe to say it isn't out of solidarity with Schori's ideals.

  4. You know that if the court had come down on her side it would have all been just fine and justice would have won the day.

    This is liberalism for you.

  5. And from there she could have sold the properties at top dollar - their are Evangelical congregations (non-Anglican) that would have bought them... That or developpers - they are set on some prime real estate.

This isn't as dramatic in the vast scheme of things as Protestants may wish to think it is - total, utter and irrevocable turning from the Catholic Faith has been a war of attrition always won by non-Catholic parties outside of the Catholic Church.
