Just yesterday a new Melkite readings of the day mailing list began and, after receiving the first daily mail-out, it looks to be quite useful. Here is what you get sent:
- A short blurb on where we are in the calendar.
- The class of feast. For those unfamiliar this ranges from 1 to 5. The first class feasts are to our Lord. The second class feasts are to the Theotokos. The third class feasts are for saints that have an akolouthia [ακολουθια - to follow] written for them (this is a set of texts for the daily offices e.g. matins, vespers) and for use of the Polyeleos. Between 1-3 and 4-5 there are two intermediate classes. The first is katholikon, which prescribes use of large bells and celebration of the Eucharist at the main holy table. The second is "small bells," which allows for a more solemn feast for some reason (church patronal feast day, church holds a relic of that saint, etc.) if approved by the bishop. Returning to the classes, the 4th and 5th commemorate the lives of the saints, holy events, and holy objects.
- The Epistle for the Divine Liturgy.
- The Gospel for the Divine Liturgy.
- The Eothion Gospel. There are eleven of these and they are gospel readings related to the Resurrection read at Orthros in the morning.
- Synaxarion of the Day, which is a story of the saint or event commemorated.
- Old Testament reading of the day (soon to be added).
- Kontakia of the day (soon to be added), which are thematic hymns.
- Troparia of the day (soon to be added), which is a short hymn often of one stanza that can be further classified into type like theotokia (to Mary) or a stavrotheotokia if it makes mention of the Crucifixion (stavros/stauros = cross) or apolytokia that summarizes the feast being commemorated.
