On Orthodox Chant

Religion & Ethics Newsweekly did a short story on Orthodox chant. Go take a look here. I watch the show weekly and recommend it (half fast-forwarded through and half watched with interest).

  1. wonderfully simplified. it seems to be a blend of russian and byzantine tones. i prefer the byzatnine for its sumblimity the way i prefer byzatine icons to new classic styles.

  2. I have family and friends from all different jurisdictions. There is always a mix of the familiar and the novel when you visit a parish from a different musical/ethnic background than your own.

  3. the presuppostion that language is the essnetial road to 'understanding' and knowledge of the mystical and divine implies that it is through human comprehension that it is acheived. it is through grace and the lifting up our spiritual hearts and mind which brings us to arriving at wisdom. The seeking our of God is one gift. Hearing the voice of our Good Shepard is another. Many great intellects know Biblical verse and Church history and Canon Law, belching repeatedly and publically their information to dispute the Faith of Christ. It is therefor a mystical understanding that we hear the Good Shepard who willingly laid down his life for his flock. To misapply the added benefit of using the vanacular of the people as the primary vehicle to the one true faith omits a very treasured and worthy population the mentally challenged. Sheep are relativley speaking quite dumb.
