Divine Liturgy in St. Peter's Basilica

To me, this is quite an important moment; an Orthodox Divine Liturgy in the crypt of St. Peter’s Basilica followed by veneration of his relics.

(mospat.ru) - Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk celebrated the Divine Liturgy at the burial site of St. Peter in the crypt of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Concelebrating were Archbishops Kirill of Yaroslavl and Rostov and Feognost of Sergiev Posad.

  1. I look forward to the day when the Western Rite Mass (Tridentine Solemn High or course, not Novus Ordo Lite. We don't want to embarrass ourerlves) is celebrated on Athos, Christ the Saviour and the St Sergius Lavra =)

  2. There was once a Latin monastery on Athos so bringing that back would be wonderful. I thought the same thing when I posted it: this will not be reciprocated until something changes and that's cause for sadness.

  3. Yes, there was an Amalfitan monastery on Athos, and no one seems to know what happened to it, but it's mentioned in some early Athonite documents and its abbot signed various documents along with the other abbots.

  4. A good question, Dr. Karras. It would be interesting to find a book that talks to the history of their monastery or at least makes some educated guesses.

  5. The Amalfitan monastery on Mount Athos is still there, but abandoned. Even after the Great Schism of 1054, the monastery was still functioning until the first few decades of the 13th Century.
