The fast-friendly road trip

The family is making a road trip up North in July. On fasting days travel across this great country can be difficult. The obvious "adult" choice is to pack food ahead of time as it's cheaper, faster on the road, and without surprises, but where is the fun in it?

So, starting in Texas and making our way to Pennsylvania, we need some restaurant advice. Sit-down dining is fair game as is drive-through fare. Let's see some comments!

  • Burger King: Veggie Burgers (we 86 the mayo)
  • Chipotle/Qdoba: Veggie Burritos or Tacos
  • KFC: We just buy a bunch of vegetable sides
  • Taco Bell: Fresco Style Bean Burritos

  1. Boston Market has a good selection of sides that make a tasty meal. A little pricey, tho. I love Long John Silver's clam strips.

  2. Didn't know that about Long John Silver's. Added to our list. Many _many_ years ago they had wraps. I used to order them as you could get a veggie version (though it confused them to drop the fish), but that was 10 years ago.

  3. Cliff Bars are good truck stop fare as are granola bars. I will sometimes go for the Odwalla smoothies, too, for something other than starches and simple carbs - though you have to check some of them for whey.

Vegetable soups, salads and shrimp/calamari kinds of things are often a easy go to selection at another other kinds of restaurant, too, though I had to go with a fish sandwich at one place in central PA. I find it also necessary to caveat every order with "and no cheese, butter, mayo or anything, if there is any" - they just assume you're lactose intolerant, which isn't as weirdo as 'vegan' (they wouldn't even know what to make of 'fasting').

You could also decide to change to the New Calendar as of today and then reconsider your choice when you get home.

  4. The bars and Odwalla are my two favorites as well. Lactose intolerant is good shorthand. Calendar changing is a great idea you can use often... Xmas presents would work well for this.

  5. The best choice that is consistent country-wide is Cracker Barrel, by far. You can get the vegetable plates, which aren't too expensive, and can possibly be shared between the young'ins. Plus, there are Cracker Barrels about every 100 miles at least.

  6. Nice! And the Cracker Barrel dress code is not so strict we can't be a bit travel worn and not go in.

  7. Oh... and Waffle House. Hash browns, covered, smothered etc etc. If you're really adventurous you can try the Chinese buffets.

  8. Noodles and company is by far the most fast worthy restaurant we have found. All the dishes are made without meat, but you can add it (including shrimp!) for only $2 more. The food is for the most part healthy and very tasty. You can usually find them near malls.
