Coptic martyrs to be commemorated in January

(BOC) - On Sunday, 9 January, Coptic Orthodox Churches throughout Europe will commemorate the martyrs killed at Al-Qidiseen Church in Alexandria on New Year’s Eve. As an act of sympathy and solidarity Abba Seraphim has directed that all British Orthodox churches will hold a similar service of commemoration immediately following the morning Liturgy.

H.H. Pope Shenouda has announced that the celebration of the Feast of the Nativity will continue as usual in Coptic Churches throughout the world on Friday, 7 January, but in many places the festivities usually associated with the feast will be muted and bishops and clergy are encouaging a time of reflection and retreat.

On Saturday, 29 January there will be an Egypt Day of Prayer held at St. Mary’s Bryanston Square, Wyndham Place, London, W1H 1PF beginning at 10.45 am. This has been organised by Christian Solidarity Wordwide (CSW) and United Action for Egyptian Christians (UAFEC). Abba Seraphim and clergy from the British Orthodox Church will attend and he is encouraging laity to attend where possible.

    Setting aside for a moment my very deep sympathy for the families of the martyrs; who, or what, is the British Orthodox Church?

    OK. That explains why I had not heard of them. They are aligned with the non-Chalcedonians. I pray that God may strengthen the Coptic Church during its hour of persecution.

OCA takes strong stand for canonical Orthodoxy

( Orthochristian.com ) - The primate of the Orthodox Church in America, His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon of Washington and All America and Canada, will concelebrate with the primate of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church, His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine, in western Ukraine later this week. The Ukrainian Orthodox Diocese of Chernivtsi and Bukovina “awaits the visit of the primate of the Orthodox Church in America on June 1–2, 2024. Solemn services will be held in the Cathedral of the Descent of the Holy Spirit in Chernivtsi, with the participation of both primates.” The Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church in America formally rejects communion with the schismatics of the “Orthodox Church in Ukraine,” recognizing only the canonical UOC under Met. Onuphry. The Ukrainian primate was the honored guest at the OCA’s 18th All-American Council in July 2015.
