An interesting icon to remember 9/11

The below is an icon I noticed when perusing the Ukrainian Greek Catholic website The Way (ШЛЯХ). While I understand the sentiment, I'm rather uncomfortable the icon's composition. The Theotokos bore the Christ Child in her womb. The Pokrov/Intercession/Agia Skepi/Holy Protection type icon (if any icon would be appropriate here) would be more fitting. Thoughts? Website article is here.

  1. the more appropriate form would be the protecting veil, IF ANY, and if that over the space or area after the collapse. maybe showing somehow the destroyed remains of the greek church.
your remarks concerning the pose of the virgin are right on spot.

  2. I saw a picture of this "icon" (or one like it) several years ago.
    I agree with all comments.

  3. It's sentimental, not theological. It does not lead to the contemplation of the Logos, but of the tragedy of 9/11 itself. In this respect, it is a very catophatic image leading downward toward created things as opposed to apophatic leading to contemplation of higher, uncreated things, i.e. the Logos.

  5. This was done by Jesuit Fr William Hart McNichols, who has done many aberrant "icons"; he is a pal with the notorious Br Robert Lentz...

  6. Looks more like pop art. The nebula and starfield in the background is kind of... cheesy. I appreciate the sentiment though.

  7. Not appropriate for an icon. The veil of protection should be over the whole city!

Just as a point of information, William Hart McNichols is no longer a Jesuit - he left the Society several years ago. though he remains a priest.
