The blessing of new honey is a wonderful tradition. It is done traditionally on the first day of the Dormition Fast (specifically: on the Feast of the Procession of the Precious and Life-giving Cross) along with the blessing of water. I've posted on the event a few times in the past and, while it is not done by all the Orthodox Churches, it is catching on in many parishes across the US. More photos available here.

In Ukraine the first day of the fast is commemorated as the first of the 'three Saviors,' 1 August commemorating the All-Merciful Savior. Honey is blessed today, fruits on the 'second Savior' (the Transfiguration), and herbs on the 'third Savior' (the Icon 'Not Made By Hands').
ReplyDeleteI have not been able to find a copy of the prayer for the blessing of honey in English. Does anyone know of a source for it?
ReplyDeleteWe blessed honey last year as the feast fell on a Sunday. I'm fairly sure that we got the prayer from the abridged Trebnik which I think is published by St Tikhon's.
