Is the male-only priesthood a discipline or essential to the nature of being a priest? Sr. Vassa (again unflinchingly taking up a contentious topic by climbing up the ladder to the highest platform and then jumping into the deep end head first) dives right in and says there is no reason beyond personal preference to not have female clergy. You know, when people ask me about women in priesthood, they say, 'Sister, why can't women be priests?' And I say, 'Women CAN be priests. We don't WANT them to be priests.' Because you see, God can do anything, and the Church, by divine authority, uh, can do anything, but, the Church doesn't want to - and that's a legitimate reason. What I don't like is when we TRY to pretend that there are other reasons for this, because it's legitimate not to want something, and there are reasons not to want this - right? - but, we shouldn't pretent that there's some... reason, that, for example, the maleness...
"...and stressed his principled position..."
ReplyDeleteDid Met. Tikhon and/or the OCA synod (presuming I am reading the pronoun correctly) *publicly* state a "principled" position on "the non recognition" of the Orthodox Church of the Ukraine? If so, link?

DeleteThanks Matthew. The soundbite:
Delete"To continue to recognize and support Metropolitan Onufry as the canonical head and Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church;
To withhold, with several of our sister Churches, recognition of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine;
That no changes be made to the diptychs, noting that the Orthodox Church in America has not been formally requested to make such changes;"
Looking forward to hearing Met. Tikhon speak at Saint Tikhon's Orthodox University (where the 1917-1918 Council was held) on Sunday.
ReplyDeleteI'm an OCA priest in the Diocese of the South. I'm not sure why there is any idea that we have not consistently supported the canonical Church of Ukraine under Met. Onuphry. His Beatitude Tikhon has repeatable affirmed this and our synod has quite publicly and repeatable stated and affirmed this.
ReplyDeleteThere are a few out there that jump at the chance to put down the OCA for anything. This is no different, sadly.
Bless Fr. Alexis,
ReplyDeleteDo you anticipate a scenario where the OCA might break communion with the GOA?
