Mexico gets a new bishop

(Orthodox Times) - On Sunday, December 6, 2020, on the day of the feast of St. Nicholas, Bishop Isichios of Markiani, Assistant Bishop of the Holy Metropolis of Mexico, was ordained.

The ordination took place at the Church of Agia Sophia in Mexico City by Metropolitan Athenagoras of Mexico and Exarch of Central America. Archbishop Alejo of Mexico (OCA Church) and Bishops Athinagoras of Myrina and Timotheos of Assos (Ecumenical Patriarchate) participated as well.

    1. If anyone has any links, outside of North America stats are really hard to come by. I think the Greeks have only a handful in Mexico with the majority of parishes (40?) being Gautemala and Columbia. Antiochians have 20ish and Oca have 5-20 depending how you split up their mission districts (like Gautemala priests are still scarce)

    2. Interestingly the churches are much more multiethnic than Brazil or North America. (Less immigrants from the home countrirs I guess)

  2. So the progress of colonialism in Mexico continues with the consecration of yet another hierarch representative of foreign dominion. At least he looks like a local, but the titular see appointment spells out phanariot irreality over pastoral sincerity.

  3. Calm down dude. Most of the EP's bishops in Latin America are locals. In fact they have consecrated the most local bishops out of anyone down there.

    1. Although salsa or bossa nova have not been approved for liturgical use, appropriate accomodations appear to have been made. Worshipping with the Mayans will feel distinct from worshipping with Cubans for example. As to the language, the services are performed in Spanish where this is required.

  5. Interesting that the EP has appointed hispanic bishops now and in the past but to this day has not ever consecrated a non Greek in America.
