Ukrianian bishop to take government office

I've been posting on this story as it developed - quite curious how this will turn out. As I doubt that the policy will change I have no idea how this will be sorted out. Interestingly, a Roman Catholic Bishop Fernando Lugo (retired) has also been elected to the presidency in Paraguay. The reporting on this event so far is a waiting pattern around the Vatican for a response.

06/02/2008 Kyiv (RISU) — According to portal-credo.ru, the superior of the Kyiv Monastery of the Caves, Archbishop Pavlo (Lebid) of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church – Moscow Patriarchate, has become a deputy of the Kyiv City Council. RISU’s Ukrainian-language webpage posted this story on 30 May 2008.
The hierarch announced his decision to run as a Party of Regions’ candidate on 16 April. On 18 April, the UOC-MP Synod of Bishops “abolished participation of UOC bishops and clergy in any city elections for pastoral reasons.” Despite this decree, the Kyiv Monastery of the Caves superior ran and won and is now also a deputy of the Kyiv Regional Council.
