Church to be rebuilt in Turkey

The mercurial Turkish government, that forces the Ecumenical Patriarchate to live in a shoebox, is allowing Russian expatriates in Alania, Turkey to rebuild a 5th century church. The wisdom of this world is foolishness in God's sight. Hopefully pictures will be forthcoming.

Alania, May 20 (Interfax) - The Russian community of Alania has been granted permission to rebuild the Byzantine church of St. George located in the Alanian Fortress.

At the first stage, the project budget is 500,000 euro. To generate funds, special donation boxes may be put in Turkish airports, Angelica Angela, president of the Society for Assistance and Cooperation of Russian-Speaking Citizens of Alania, told Interfax.

Alania's Russian community believes that the renovated church will not only be a part of Turkey's cultural and historical heritage, but also become a community center for the former citizens of the USSR. Today, about three thousand citizens of Russian origin live in Alania.

This church supposedly dates back to the 5th or 6th century. Now it is closed for visitors.

  2. There are so many saints from what is now called Turkey that I can only think rebuilding churches in that area can be called a good thing.
