Is the male-only priesthood a discipline or essential to the nature of being a priest? Sr. Vassa (again unflinchingly taking up a contentious topic by climbing up the ladder to the highest platform and then jumping into the deep end head first) dives right in and says there is no reason beyond personal preference to not have female clergy. You know, when people ask me about women in priesthood, they say, 'Sister, why can't women be priests?' And I say, 'Women CAN be priests. We don't WANT them to be priests.' Because you see, God can do anything, and the Church, by divine authority, uh, can do anything, but, the Church doesn't want to - and that's a legitimate reason. What I don't like is when we TRY to pretend that there are other reasons for this, because it's legitimate not to want something, and there are reasons not to want this - right? - but, we shouldn't pretent that there's some... reason, that, for example, the maleness...
I do not understand why a Coptic hierarch would believe that a Catholic pope would have any influence over non-Catholics. It might make sense if the request were for the Catholic church (and Protestant spin-offs) to resume calculating the date of Pascha according to the method which it abandoned. That would place all Christians with a common date. I look forward to reading other responses.
ReplyDeleteThe Pope has no influence over Protestant spin-offs too.
DeleteHow do you think the Protestants are picking the date of Pascha? Do you think they're all sitting down to agree or just checking to see what the Catholic calendar says?
ReplyDeleteIf you want to start the process, either go from the smallest group to the largest or go for the head of a billion people first and see if that moves the smaller groups too.
There is a saying: "When Rome sneezes Protestants catch a cold."
DeleteCelebrate Christmas on the right date, and the rest will follow.
ReplyDeleteIf we consider the spiritual side of a common date for Easter as well as Christmas it would be a great outpouring of grace on the church.United in adoration and prayer to Our Lord by all His children and a greater spirit of unity among christians.Of course there will opposition on both sides of the fence ,but that is expected by those who cling to the letter of the old law.
