BIG changes afoot in America for Greek Archdiocese

(GOARCH) - Today, Thursday, October 8, 2020, on the third day of its work in this current month, the Holy and Sacred Synod extensively examined, among other items, issues of the Holy Archdiocese of America, and considered reports of His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America. The following decisions were taken:

a)    It placed into abeyance the force of the Charter of the Holy Archdiocese of America, with the objective of constituting a joint Committee of representatives of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the Archdiocese for the composition of a new Charter.

b)    It placed His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios of Boston under a penance of suspension until the Feast of Christmas, on account that he had fallen into canonical transgressions.

c)     It transferred His Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos of New Jersey to the Holy Metropolis of Sardes and appointed as Patriarchal Vicar in the vacant Eparchy of New Jersey, Archbishop Elpidophoros of America.

    1. No one knows for sure. One possibility is that the EP wants to make the Metropolitans vicars of the Archbishop and assign them to dead sees in Asia Minor. It seems like a seemingly plausible reason to issue a new charter. We shall see.

  2. Autocephaly. What a nice word. The Greeks here should ask the OCA what it's like to not answer to a bishop of a place that isn't there anymore.

    1. Yeah...or to have your bishops elected HERE in this country, and empowered to act like real bishops.

Is it perfect? No. But it has demonstrated the ability to correct itself, which is obviously absent in the GOA.

  3. I thought this was Babylon Bee, or the Onion Dome for a minute.

Holy Metropolis of Sardes? You mean the one in Asia Minor?

When was the last liturgy conducted there? I'm guessing the 1300's?

    1. The new Bishop of Sardes might want to ask Met. Kallistos how often he sees his flock in Diokleia. Looks like the bishop will be able to visit Church M, AE, D and E. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byzantine_churches_at_Sardis

  4. so I must say this again,,,, I had lunch with a fellow who graduated from Liberty University and was completley dumbfounded. Now I parallel this observation with the GOA and Hellenic College/Holy Cross Seminary...... Back in 1971 Liberty University began as a Baptist Seminary -- HC/HC began in 1948? 13 years earlier. In the past 49 years Liberty has grown to 15,000 students, How many are at HC/HC? and it has a 1.5 billion, yes billion, dollar endowment. And what is the financial status of HC/HC? which church group has embraced the USA and which has not? which plows its money back into the local infrastrudture and which allows a foreign entity to bleed it dry? and now how hyporicritical, I am told that the Archbishop meets with seretary Pompeo regularly re the Turkey/Greece situation, yet he gave an invication at the demodratic convention, yet seeks republican aid. that takes a lot of hutzpa - in engineering we would say that he had a pair of brass ones-- so whe I see all of this byzantine madness re restruturing, and reassigning,, all I can ask is where are the priorities?,,, If were Jesus I would be sending lightning bolts down,,, but of course Jesus has the patience to allow those who refuse to follow his guidance to self destruct. You guys need to get you Chrisitan act together and cut the byzantine politics. otherwise i predict a very messy self implosion. the Nero syndrome is alive and well.

    1. I am a Liberty grad. One of the reasons why Liberty grew rapidly after Dr. Falwell died is because he had several large life insurance policies that named the university as beneficiary. So when he passed the university had a lot of funds to use to continue to grow. Included in this process are visionary leaders who seek to grow the program which is what they did.
