Remembering the sacrifice of the martyr, Fr. Basilios Nassar

From the blog of the author of the book Syria Crucified: Stories of Modern Martyrdom in an Ancient Christian Land, a post entitled "Burial of a New Martyr: 10 Years Ago, First Christian Priest Killed In Syria."


This week marks ten years since the martyrdom of Syrian Priest-Monk Basilios Nassar. His funeral took place on January 26th, 2012. As jihadists advanced on Hama in central Syria, he was shot by a sniper while trying to save another man’s life who had collapsed in the street. In the Orthodox Church, especially in the Russian tradition, some Saints are given the title “passion bearer” as they faced death in an especially heroic and Christ-like manner.

A section dedicated to this righteous passion bearer details his harrowing ordeal in the book written by Zachary Wingerd and myself, Syria Crucified: Stories of Modern Martyrdom in an Ancient Christian Land (available direct through the publisher here).
