Once a Russian monk, whose obedience was often to run many errands for the monastery, asked the abbot if he could listen to a recording of the prayer rule whenever he was obliged to travel. And the abbot replied, "So your tape recorder will be doing the praying, and your tape recorder will be saved."

ReplyDeleteHe's been deposed, so no longer a priest. Sad news. Lord have mercy.
DeleteThis is such sorrowful news that I have trouble believing it. I saw him regularly serving at St Tikhon's; then he wasn't there; then he was on our parish prayer list, and I assumed he was sick (in body). Lord have mercy.
DeleteI heard some incredibly joyful news that Monk Herman has returned to the fold of the Orthodox Church. Can you confirm?
DeleteOn pretty good authority: Monk Herman has returned to the Church. After falling away he was deposed from the priesthood, so he will be (has been?) received as a simple monk. Not sure whether he's returning to St Tikhon's. Glory be to God.
DeleteWell this news comes to me sideways. By way of confirmation, I do see his page at academia.edu has been updated with: "Fr. Herman is a hieromonk of the Eparchy of St. Nicholas of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. He is a graduate student...". I talked to Fr. Herman a few times (in person and online) and he even gave me some good counsel at one time, so again I taken aback.
ReplyDeleteAnyone know the backstory here? In these situations, often there is some neglect/abuse by those in authority in the hierarchy above - either that, or by the person themselves. Not always the case, but a too common situation.
