The GOA Clergy-Laity 2016: Holy and Great Council

The tone and content of Dn. John Chryssavgis lecture on the fruits and difficulties of the Crete event (starting around 12:30) are not what I would call conciliatory. In fact he highlights divisions and often comes across as condescending of his detractors. This won't convince many people to his side and might well enrage more than a few people.

    He disturbed me before the robber council. He disturbed me during the robber council. And he disturbs me after the robber council. His arrogance knows no bounds. I could not even finish listening to him. I disagree with almost everything he says. The only dividing issue is the fact that this robber council had to happen....and that the Deacon and his cohorts continue to flood the holy Orthodox Church with their propaganda.

    Archbishop Demetrios' comments in the Q & A comparing those who don't accept this [supposedly] non-dogmatic synod with those who rejected Chalcedon, thereby lacking the fullness Orthodoxy, are quite disturbing. The Phanariots play nicer with heterodox and non-Christians than they do with their own brethren.

    It is highly disturbing that Archbishop Demetrios dares to equate the Cretan meeting with the Council of Chalcedon. And it is even more disturbing that he implies those who will not recognize it as a "Holy and Great Council" are like the Monophysites! I think the EP may find itself as a schismatic entity very soon.

    Those he's criticizing are being taken to task because "conciliatory" isn't even part of their vocabulary. There's a long list of polemic speeches and statements by "the other team" that Chryssavgis' rhetoric doesn't come close to.

      I'd say they are being taken to task because there is a different viewpoint on these topics. Regardless of the sometimes unkind words spoken by the opponents of the EP agenda, it is not (in my opinion) the tone that he's even mentioning here. It's the content of their opinions.

OCA takes strong stand for canonical Orthodoxy

( Orthochristian.com ) - The primate of the Orthodox Church in America, His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon of Washington and All America and Canada, will concelebrate with the primate of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church, His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine, in western Ukraine later this week. The Ukrainian Orthodox Diocese of Chernivtsi and Bukovina “awaits the visit of the primate of the Orthodox Church in America on June 1–2, 2024. Solemn services will be held in the Cathedral of the Descent of the Holy Spirit in Chernivtsi, with the participation of both primates.” The Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church in America formally rejects communion with the schismatics of the “Orthodox Church in Ukraine,” recognizing only the canonical UOC under Met. Onuphry. The Ukrainian primate was the honored guest at the OCA’s 18th All-American Council in July 2015.
