I say reconsecrate that church immediately

Image
August 30, 2017 ( LifeSiteNews ) – A Spanish bishop apologized for an event in his diocese during which a Hindu deity was processed around a Catholic church and the priest who allowed it resigned from his position as Vicar General. However, the bishop said Hindu beliefs don't need to be "rebuked" and that wasn't the point of his statement. It's unclear whether the priest, Father Juan José Mateos Castro, will remain in his position at that parish, Our Lady of Africa. Bishop Rafael Zornoza Boy of the Diocese of Cádiz y Ceuta issued the apology, portions of which Crux translated. A video of the procession shows people clapping and taking photos as the statue of Ganesh, the elephant-headed Hindu god, processed through the church past statues of Catholic saints toward the altar. It was even in front of the tabernacle at one point, which houses consecrated hosts that the Catholic Church teaches are the literal body, blood, soul, and divinity of Jesus Christ. P...

St. Vlad's Seminary and the seditious Amsterdam Conference

Image
Fr. Johannes L. Jacobse writes in AOIUSA an article entitled " St. Vladimir’s Seminary Reacts to Amsterdam Conference, Bishops Remain Silent ." He asks a very good question: Why are the bishops by and large remaining silent when their clergy start spouting nonsense? The Internet has given an immediacy to the textual purgation of bad ideas like never before. Arians had catchy songs, others had slogans or imperial approbation, but the modern new media publication process makes ready quislings for the deceiver without much effort at all. The words of a simple parish priest no longer have an audience of 200, but of thousands upon thousands when they hit the Internet and the forces at play (a la Public Orthodoxy) encouraging such bunkum need to be met with the same concerted effort that they are applying in disseminating their contrary opinions. The meeting in Amsterdam organized by Public Orthodoxy several months ago to discuss Orthodoxy and sexuality raised serious questio...

The faux outrage over the Nashville Statement

U.S. ( Babylon Bee ) - After numerous prominent Christians and everyday believers alike signed the Nashville Statement affirming basic Christian doctrine held with rare exception for 2,000 years, progressives across the nation flooded the internet in droves to voice their horror and disgust at the shocking set of beliefs. “I can’t believe these people would just come out and blatantly state something Christians have unflinchingly agreed on for millennia,” one liberal Christian wrote on Twitter. “It’s absolutely beyond callous.” “I literally just can’t even,” she added later. Secular humanist scholar Zeke Reddington agreed, stating on his Patheos blog that for Christians to publicly affirm historically Christian ideas was “unthinkable.” “It’s 2017, for crying out loud. I can’t believe we have to deal with people who disagree with us in the current year!” he wrote in his insightful 8,000-word blog post. At publishing time, the many bigoted backers of the Nashville Statement h...

Tabots consecrated in Bronx cathedral

Image
A tabot is a small tablet that symbolises the Ark of the Covenant. Tabots are regarded by 35 million Ethiopian Christians as so sacrosanct that only priests are allowed to even look at them. Every Ethiopian church has a tabot, which is consecrated instead of the building and its grounds. Tabots are made from stone or wood and generally measure about 7" by 5" and bear a carved cross and an ancient Ethiopian inscription with the name of the saint the church is dedicated to. In the Syriac Church they use a wooden thabilitho (which also symbolizes the Cross of Christ) whereas Orthodoxy uses an antimension (meaning "instead of the table"). The use of the antimension spread in response to the heresies (initially primarily iconoclasm) where the clergy could not trust that the altar had been properly consecrated. Eventually the antimension was used even when there was no doubt about the canonical order of the church. Bronx, NY ( SCOOCH ) – On the evening of Thursday, ...

Please pray for our clergy heading to south Texas

Image
A priest suiting up this afternoon before he makes the journey down to south Texas O God, our help in time of need, Who are just and merciful, and Who inclines to the supplications of His people. Look down upon those seeking to serve you in south Texas and have mercy on them and deliver them from the troubles that will beset them. Deal with them not according to their iniquities, but according to Your manifold mercies, for they are the works of Your hands, and You know their weaknesses. I pray to you to grant them Your divine helping grace, and endow them with patience and strength to endure their hardships with complete submission to Your Will, for we exalt and praise Your Holy Name, O Father, Son and Holy Spirit, both now and forever and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Let us place a crown of hymns of praise on grace's Forerunner

Image
O Baptist John, preacher of repentance, when your head was cut off you sanctified the earth, for you spread the Law of God to the faithful, and made lawlessness disappear. As one present at the throne of Christ, the heavenly King, plead with Him to have mercy on our souls. The Forerunner's glorious decapitation occurred out of divine dispensation, so that even to those in Hades he should declare the coming of the Savior. Therefore, mourn, O Herodias, who asked for unlawful murder: The law of God, nor the living age did she love, but one contrived and fleeting.

Ohio church arsonist confesses to police

( OCA ) - A lone suspect was taken into custody in the early hours of Tuesday, August 29, 2017, confessing to attacks on two parishes of the Orthodox Church in America on Sunday morning, August 27. According to Priest Mikel Hill, Rector of Saint Nikolai Mission, Louisville, OH, “the suspect made a full confession” that included setting fire to the inside of the church, as well as damaging a large cross in front of Saint Nicholas Church, Alliance, OH. Established two years ago, Saint Nikolai Mission is within the OCA’s Bulgarian Diocese, while Saint Nicholas Church, which dates back to 1912, is within the OCA’s Romanian Episcopate. Priest Ilie Geani Nemes is Rector of the Alliance parish. Fire officials were convinced from the start that the churches, which are a mere five miles from each other, were targeted. “It is definitely arson, there is no question,” township Fire Chief Matthew Anstine told CantonRep.com reporters. When firefighters arrived at Saint Nikolai’s at 8:26 a....

Romanian Church rocked by another case of sexual crime

The Romanian Church has been getting a lot of bad press lately on the problem of clerical sexual (and financial) misconduct. There are entire websites and Facebook groups tracking the behavior and I see no sign that this is going to get resolved soon. Prayers for the people of Romania and the victims of these heinous acts. ( New Vision ) - A Romanian Orthodox Church bishop has resigned after a video was released, according to local media, of him having sex with a 17-year-old student from his seminary. The video showing Corneliu Barladeanu, bishop of the eastern city of Husi, which has been circulating online since mid-July, has created a scandal in Romania, where 85 percent of the population are Orthodox Christians. The Holy Synod, the Church's ruling body, met on Thursday and Friday to discuss the matter. After the two day discussion, the bishop -- who claims he is innocent -- decided to resign "for the peace and the good of the Church," the Romanian church leaders...

Ohio church struck by arson

( The Review ) - The large cross in the field next to a Marlboro Township church is wrapped in crime scene tape. Marlboro Township police and fire personnel remained at St. Nikolai Orthodox Church, 9831 State St. NE in Louisville, most of the morning as they, along with the Ohio Fire Marshal’s office, looked for leads into who attempted to burn down this two-year-old church. Crews were dispatched to the church around 8:26 a.m. Sunday for the fire, after Father Mikel Hill had arrived to prepare the building for that morning’s service and was greeted by the smell of fuel and smoke. According to Marlboro Township Fire Chief Matt Anstine, a broken window on the back side of the building was used to gain entry. Most of the blaze was out with crews tackling some hot spots, but a haze of smoke remained, he said. Marlboro police chief Ron Devies said that there was evidence that diesel and propane may have been used as accelerants. He estimates that the blaze had been set shortly befor...

Earliest Latin commentary on the Gospels discovered

( The Conversation ) - The earliest Latin commentary on the Gospels, lost for more than 1,500 years, has been rediscovered and made available in English for the first time . The extraordinary find, a work written by a bishop in northern Italy, Fortunatianus of Aquileia, dates back to the middle of the fourth century. The biblical text of the manuscript is of particular significance, as it predates the standard Latin version known as the Vulgate and provides new evidence about the earliest form of the Gospels in Latin. Despite references to this commentary in other ancient works, no copy was known to survive until Dr Lukas Dorfbauer, a researcher from the University of Salzburg, identified Fortunatianus’ text in an anonymous manuscript copied around the year 800 and held in Cologne Cathedral Library. The manuscripts of Cologne Cathedral Library were made available online in 2002. Scholars had previously been interested in this ninth-century manuscript as the sole witness to a sho...

God protect the Republic of Texas and her people!

A Prayer in the face of inclement weather O Master, Lord our God, Who through Thy consubstantial Word, Who is without beginning, and Thy life-giving Spirit, Who is equal in honor, hast brought everything out of nothingness into being; Who hast set sandy barriers to the sea, and hast weighed the mountains and the valleys in a balance; Who hast measured the skies and holds the water in the palm of Thy hand; Who hast given to this visible world of the senses its law and rules, its harmony and order; Who hast appointed changes to the weather and variations in the orbit of the sun; Who, through the mingling of the elements, holds all things together by Thine inexpressible power and keeps them free from harm and intact: Do Thou Thyself, all-good King, extending to us Thine innate and customary love and goodness, visit the work of Thy hands. Do not deprive us of Thy mercies and Thy compassion, and do not destroy Thine inheritance, for Thou hast ineffably created us in Thine own image. ...

We honor you, O divine warrior, glorious Phanourios!

Image
Today my wife is making Phanouropita (also often spelled Fanouropita). The explanation is from Orthowiki and the recipe is from the invaluable orthodox.net website. The custom of the Phanouropita ("Phanourios" and "pita" for "bread" or "cake") is a Greek and Cypriot tradition, preserved in many regions of Greece and Cyprus and spread to the Greek people of the diaspora. Though it is not a Holy Tradition, it has been welcomed and adopted formerly into the church as a blessing service, that take no more than 5 minutes to complete. It is offered at Vespers services and/or just before the Liturgy finishes on the feast day of the saint (August 27). Many villagers in Greece believe that they follow this tradition to grant rest to the soul of the saint's mother. The Church does not formally hold this position since there is no evidence from what we know of the saint's life to confirm whether his mother indeed was a fornicator, as this ...

Sprawling UGCC Philly archeparchy facilities consolidating

Philadelphia ( CBS ) — Buildings and the cost to maintain them prompted the leader of the Ukrainian catholic church in Philadelphia to take steps to begin a restructuring of church operations. Metropolitan Archbishop Stefan Soroka, who leads the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy – or diocese – says it became clear in the last several months that the church has too many buildings and needs to better manage its resources. So, leading by example, Soroka says he ordered the move of the chancery building on North Franklin Street, and the cathedral rectory to space across the street next to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. “This building the chancery moved in was a school before. Well, the school’s been closed for 30 years already. And, so we kind of used it for a retreat center, for a museum, different things, but is that the best use for it,” said Soroka. The rectory now occupies a former monastery here. Soroka says he’s also directing pastors in this region to re-evalu...

The blessing of honey at Jordanville

Image
( Jordanville ) - In the Greek Chasoslov (Orologion) of 1897 is explained thus the derivation of this feast: "By reason of the sicknesses, often everywhere occurring in August, from of old customarily it was done at Constantinople to carry out the Venerable Wood of the Cross along the roads and streets for the sanctifying of places and for the driving away of sicknesses. On the eve (31 July), carrying it out from the imperial treasury, they placed it upon the holy table of the Great Church (in honour of Saint Sophia – the Wisdom of God). From this feastday up to the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God, making litia throughout all the city, they then placed it forth for all the people to venerate. This also is the Issuing-forth of the Venerable Cross". In the Russian Church this feast is combined also with a remembrance of the Baptism of Rus', on 1 August 988. In the "Account about the making of services in the holy catholic and apostolic great church of th...

A Liturgy in Belgrade... 日本語で。

( spc.rs ) - With the blessing of Serbian Patriarch Irinej and Metropolitan Daniel of Tokyo and All Japan, Bishop Antonije of Moravica, Vicar Bishop of the Serbian Patriarch, celebrated the Holy Hierachal Liturgy with the concelebration of a guest from the Japanese Orthodox Church, priest Gregory Mizuno from Yokohama, in the Cathedral church in Belgrade on Sunday, 6 August 207, on the feast of the Holy Martyrs of Prebilovci and Lower Herzegovina. Father Gregory pronounced prayers and exclamations in Japanese, which was, actually, the first time in history that in the Belgrade's Cathedral church the Holy Hierarchal Liturgy was served in this language as well. Some clergymen of the Cathedral concelebrated. This is Fr. Gregory's third visit to Serbia. He came with his wife Elizabeth, and expressed a wish to concelebrate, for the first time, in Belgrade. After the Liturgy, a solemn lunch was prepared for Bishop Antonije, Fr. Gregory and Cathedral clergy. Priest Gregory Mizun...

Contentious movie on Tsar Nicholas II gets Russian release

Image
( ABC News ) - A historical film about the last Russian czar's affair with a ballerina has been cleared for release, the Culture Ministry said Thursday, a decision that follows months of disputes and angry calls for its ban. "Matilda," which describes Nicholas II's relationship with Matilda Kshesinskaya, has drawn virulent criticism from some Orthodox believers and hard-line nationalists, who see it as blasphemy against the emperor, glorified as a saint by the Russian Orthodox Church. The controversy around the film, unparalleled in Russia's post-Soviet history, has reflected the church's rising influence and the increasing assertiveness of radical religious activists. Russian lawmaker Natalya Poklonskaya, who previously had served as the chief regional prosecutor in Crimea following its 2014 annexation by Moscow, spearheaded the campaign for banning the film. A devout Orthodox believer, Poklonskaya even asked the Prosecutor General's office to...

Procession of the Precious Cross & the blessing of new honey

Image
( OCA ) - The Procession of the Venerable Wood of the Life-Creating Cross of the Lord: In the Greek Horologion of 1897 the derivation of this Feast is explained: “Because of the illnesses that occur in August, it was customary, in former times, to carry the Venerable Wood of the Cross through the streets and squares of Constantinople for the sanctification of the city, and for relief from sickness. On the eve (July 31), it was taken out of the imperial treasury, and laid upon the altar of the Great Church of Hagia Sophia (the Wisdom of God). From this Feast until the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, they carried the Cross throughout the city in procession, offering it to the people to venerate. This also is the Procession of the Venerable Cross.” In the Russian Church this Feast is combined also with the remembrance of the Baptism of Rus, on August 1, 988. In the “Account of the Order of Services in the Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Great Church of the Dormition,” compiled in 16...

The "bivocational" priesthood

Image
From the blog Ortho Cuban, a post entitled " The (challenge of) the care of bivocational ministers ." Bivocational ministry is on the increase. There are many people who see this as a positive thing. And, many of those people are not pastors. Bivocational ministry raises many challenges to those who are involved in it. On the one hand, it sounds great. What is not to love about bivocational ministry, particularly if you are a small church that is trying to maintain itself, or a mission that is trying to grow? There are various books written about bivocational ministry, such as the one above. However, equally, there are articles written that warn about the perils of bivocational ministry. Frankly, the church is not sure what to do about bivocational ministry. On the one hand, it points to the example of Saint Paul, who worked as a tentmaker. On the other hand, most jurisdictional and denominational structures are set up to support the full-time minister and have little ...

ROCOR's new monastery devoted to Dionysios the Areopagite

Image
With the blessing of His Eminence, Metropolitan Hilarion, Archimandrite Maximos (Weimar), abbot of the Brotherhood of the Holy Cross, presently located in East Setauket, NY, announced that the Brotherhood will be leaving its current location to establish the Brotherhood of the Holy Hieromartyr Dionysios the Areopagite. Until 2010, the monastery was under the omophorion of the Jerusalem Patriarchate, and is now under the canonical authority of Metropolitan Hilarion, First Hierarch of the Russian Church Abroad. Recently, the Brotherhood faced a difficult decision; by choosing to remain within the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, a change of residence is now necessary. The present Brotherhood consists of ten monks and is led by Fr. Maximos. In addition, there is a thriving Orthodox Christian lay community, including many Russians, Ukrainians, Greeks, Romanians, and American converts, which has grown up around the monastery, and services are well-attended. Services are mai...

Bp. John of Naro-Fominsk - Internet activity: For & Against

Image
( ROC-USA ) - On Tuesday, July 25, the weekly meeting of Orthodox Youth was held in the refectory of St. Nicholas Cathedral in New York City. The speaker for the evening’s meeting was the Administrator of the Patriarchal Parishes in the USA, His Grace John, Bishop of Naro-Fominsk. His Grace proposed speaking with the youth about his thoughts on the role of the internet in the life of an Orthodox Christian. To begin, Bishop John briefly shared some of his own observations. He believes that active participation in internet discussions (when time spent on social media prevails over live communication), the notion of the “here and now” – something extremely important for a Christian – is threatened. Bishop John drew the attention of the young people [to the fact] that the life of the Church was founded on the basis of the parish community. People would gather together to pray, commune from one common Chalice, and then interact with one another during fellowship. It would seem that ...

Upcoming Orthodox young adults conference in the ATL

Image
( OCA ) - Young adults from across North America will gather this coming October 6-8, here for a new conference being organized by Orthodox churches in the Atlanta area. The CONNECT Conference is a new event for Orthodox Christian young adults (ages 20 – 39). According to Callie Corley, one of the organizers, “This conference offers an opportunity for young adults to retreat, recharge, and reconnect with Christ, the Church, and other Orthodox Christians.” Speakers at the conference include His Grace, Bishop Gregory of Nyssa, of the American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Diocese of the U.S.A., along with clergy and Orthodox laity who will speak on the theme of “Finding Christ in Every Day Life.” “Many young Orthodox Christians lose their connection to the Church after high school,” Callie noted. “This pan-Orthodox initiative is intended to help young adults stay connected to their Faith and maintain their devotion to Christ.” Registration is now open and questions may be direc...

The Human Icon - Hinduism and Orthodoxy

Image
Despite the history that divides them, Hinduism and Orthodox Christianity have much in common. In The Human Icon , Christine Mangala Frost explores how both religions seek to realise the divine potential of every human being, and the differences in their approach. Frost, who has experienced both the extraordinary riches and the all-too-human failings of Hinduism and Orthodox Christianity from the inside, is perfectly placed to examine the convergences and divergences between the two faiths. Inspired by a desire to clear up the misunderstandings that exist between the two, The Human Icon is a study in how two faiths, superficially dissimilar, can nevertheless find meeting points everywhere. The powerful intellectual and spiritual patristic traditions of Orthodox Christianity offer a rare tool for revitalising too-often stalled dialogue with Hinduism and present the chance for a broader and more diverse understanding of the oldest religion in the world. Tracing the long history of ...

Belarusian priest accused of trafficking prostitutes

Let me say this before we leap on this priest and condemn him: of the many accusations made against priests that I have covered, a surprisingly large number of them have been completely false. So, while an egregious accusation, let's not pile on before we get corroboration. ( Moscow Times ) - Belarusian authorities have reportedly detained a Russian Orthodox Church priest for his alleged role in trafficking prostitutes to Russia with the aim of helping them kick-start their careers, the Lenta news agency reports. Russian media outlet 47 news first reported on Saturday that a Russian Orthodox priest from the Peter and Paul Cathedral in Vitebsk had been detained for visiting prostitutes and arranging their transport to Russia. A representative from the Belarus Investigative Committee said on Sunday that a human-trafficking case had been initiated against a detained 39-year-old man, which corresponds to the age of the detained priest. In a conversation with Russian media outl...

Old Rite skeptical of reunion with Russian Church

Moscow, August 7 ( Interfax ) - Primate of the Russian Orthodox Old Rite Church does not believe it possible to reunite with the Moscow Patriarchate. "Injuries of the schism are too deep. We are very different in our core, in our rites and spirit. We will never accept their rites and they will hardly return to the Old rite in the neatest future," he said in his interview with Kommersant daily on Monday. He characterized existing relations with the Moscow Patriarchate as peaceful co-existence and thanked authorities for equal attitude to the both Orthodox Churches. The metropolitan also believes that good neighboring relations between the Old believers and the Moscow Patriarchate "help people to be kind to each other, live in peace, help society struggle against alcoholism, drug addiction, abortions." Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the Old believers' spiritual center at the Rogozhskoye Cemetery on May 31 and the metropolitan called this event ...

Bp. Nicholas to head Diocese of Miami and the Southeast

Image
August 3, 2017 ( Antiochian.org ) - The Reverend Clergy of the Diocese of Miami and the Southeast: Blessings and greetings to you and your families in the name of our Lord, God, and Savior Jesus Christ, as we embark on the blessed Dormition Fast. I would like to start this letter by thanking my dear brother His Grace Bishop Antoun for all the years of hard work in the Diocese of Miami and the Southeast. He touched all of our hearts with his dedication and support as he earned his gray hair: “Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is gained in a righteous life.” (Proverbs 16:31) As you all know, His Grace has decided to retire this year. I have spent months thinking about the right person to guide the clergy and laity of the Diocese of Miami and the Southeast. After much contemplation and prayer, I have decided that His Grace Bishop Nicholas will be your bishop. You all know His Grace and his dedication to and focus on spreading the word of God. His Grace, ...

Fasting. This and That. Not This or That.

Image
Let me say that I've never run into anyone who uses quotes like the below who has been heard to mean "Fasting is wonderful and essential. Just remember to also be a good guy." It is more often understood to be saying, "God, I thank You that I am not like other men. At least I'm not an ass. Is Five Guys still open?" Chrysostom's (and others') point is not that one can substitute bonhomie for a hummus and relish tray, but that fasting is the beginning of a process that includes a heightening of Christian virtues. As they say these days "don't get it twisted" - high fiving with one hand while you hold a cheeseburger-all-the-way-with-jalapeños in the other is not fasting in the spirit intended. It's not even fasting.
