Is the male-only priesthood a discipline or essential to the nature of being a priest? Sr. Vassa (again unflinchingly taking up a contentious topic by climbing up the ladder to the highest platform and then jumping into the deep end head first) dives right in and says there is no reason beyond personal preference to not have female clergy. You know, when people ask me about women in priesthood, they say, 'Sister, why can't women be priests?' And I say, 'Women CAN be priests. We don't WANT them to be priests.' Because you see, God can do anything, and the Church, by divine authority, uh, can do anything, but, the Church doesn't want to - and that's a legitimate reason. What I don't like is when we TRY to pretend that there are other reasons for this, because it's legitimate not to want something, and there are reasons not to want this - right? - but, we shouldn't pretent that there's some... reason, that, for example, the maleness...
Thank you for posting this! LuAnn was a wonderful lady. She was influential in my journey to Orthodoxy as she became one of my first Orthodox friends. She and Don were an example to Father John and I as we began our relationship. Their love for eachother was evident to everyone they met. Father John painted their house the summer he moved to my town when we began dating and spent a lot of time with LuAnn. She and Don made it possible for him to live nearby and now we are married and have two sons! I often think of LuAnn when I'm frustrated and try to be patient and hopeful as she was. This scholarship is a beautiful way to honor her. May her memory be eternal.
ReplyDeleteI'm not objecting to having more women at St Tikhon's and I certainly appreciate the generosity of the givers what isn't clear is WHY the seminary wants more women enrolled in the MDiv program.
ReplyDeleteWell Fr. Gregory, one reason (among many I am sure) is to prepare women for ministry in the Orthodox Church. Take a look at this upcoming conference: http://orthodoxdeaconess.org/women-diaconal-ministry-conference/
