Is the male-only priesthood a discipline or essential to the nature of being a priest? Sr. Vassa (again unflinchingly taking up a contentious topic by climbing up the ladder to the highest platform and then jumping into the deep end head first) dives right in and says there is no reason beyond personal preference to not have female clergy. You know, when people ask me about women in priesthood, they say, 'Sister, why can't women be priests?' And I say, 'Women CAN be priests. We don't WANT them to be priests.' Because you see, God can do anything, and the Church, by divine authority, uh, can do anything, but, the Church doesn't want to - and that's a legitimate reason. What I don't like is when we TRY to pretend that there are other reasons for this, because it's legitimate not to want something, and there are reasons not to want this - right? - but, we shouldn't pretent that there's some... reason, that, for example, the maleness...
What a great synaxis of bishops! Wish my Patriarch (John X of Antioch) had been there, really cool to see this pan-Orthodox communion.
ReplyDeleteWell, come to think of it, maybe he wasn't, because of our tiff with Jerusalem. I take back everything I said :-p
DeleteHe was present in Moscow so here is your answer.
DeleteYes, Patriarch John X was most definitely there, as well as a Metropolitan of the Georgian Church, whose Patriarch's health didn't allow him to travel. He was here last year for Patriarch Kirill's 70th birthday, however.
DeletePatriarch John X is to the right if Patriarch Kirill here: https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_FtrdGWHBps/WiNythZ-NpI/AAAAAAABBEc/G53XesQQ-skxWkb2kEAzWgU2BWfgh7seQCLcBGAs/s1600/20171202-VAR_0690-%25D0%25BE%25D0%25B1%25D1%2580.jpg
DeleteActually, I take that back—I don't see him at the actual Liturgy. He was definitely in attendance at the Bishops' Council.
DeleteAgain, Patriarch John was in Moscow but he did not concelebrate that Liturgy because of that Qatar nonsense.
