Is the male-only priesthood a discipline or essential to the nature of being a priest? Sr. Vassa (again unflinchingly taking up a contentious topic by climbing up the ladder to the highest platform and then jumping into the deep end head first) dives right in and says there is no reason beyond personal preference to not have female clergy. You know, when people ask me about women in priesthood, they say, 'Sister, why can't women be priests?' And I say, 'Women CAN be priests. We don't WANT them to be priests.' Because you see, God can do anything, and the Church, by divine authority, uh, can do anything, but, the Church doesn't want to - and that's a legitimate reason. What I don't like is when we TRY to pretend that there are other reasons for this, because it's legitimate not to want something, and there are reasons not to want this - right? - but, we shouldn't pretent that there's some... reason, that, for example, the maleness...
Patriarch Bartholomew doesn't look too happy...
ReplyDeleteDoes he ever smile? He has that much in common with Russians at least
DeleteCould someone please explain what the Rue Daru sees in the Fener? What is there to talk about? Do they feel as though they are cast adrift without Fener imprimatur? Is the prospect of functioning as an Autocephalous Church (or joining one) frighten them?
ReplyDeleteAt this point what real purpose other than self-preservation does the Fener serve? Who depends on them for anything real? The GOA (recently deprived of its Synod by the Fener to prevent independence arising)?
The EP would need to give his blessing for Autocephaly or to leave to anyone but the MP (not in communion) for that matter. Autocephaly is one option they would love to have on the table.
DeleteYou would find the same reaction if you told the OCA or most of ROCOR that they leave-to/disolve into the MP. A concern of that the Russia-centric culture of MP may stifle the unique local identity (i.e. French with russian roots), a concern about the political influence on the MP, and the lack of local autonomy (see how many bishops get shuffled in the diaspora by the MP). Finally you will find a concern that the Neo-Patristic theology would be stifled by the literal-patristic school that dominates the MP (less so among ROCOR). Remaining autonomous under the EP offer them the best chance of this. Most of the same issues come up being dissolved into the EP.
I suspect the next best option would be to negotiate a autonomous church for Western Europe (France, Belgium etc) that combines the Ukrainian, Georgian & Albanian Exarchates. This is basically saying to apply fairly the rational your giving us. If not to negotiate with the MP.
