Abp. Theodosios (Hanna) of Sebastia poisoned in Jerusalem

(MEMO) - The Head of the Sebastia Diocese of the Greek Orthodox Church in Jerusalem Archbishop Atallah Hanna was reportedly hospitalised yesterday after being poisoned by chemical substances, according to Quds TV.

Reports said the Archbishop was rushed to hospital after an Israeli gas canister was fired into his church in Jerusalem. He is expected to make a full recovery.

The outspoken Palestinian Christian leader has been a staunch critic of Israel’s treatment of Palestinians and its acts of aggression in neighbouring Lebanon and Syria.

Hanna was a notable attendee at last month’s First international Conference on Israeli Apartheid held at Istanbul. “The occupation in Jerusalem is treating us as if we are guests and foreigners in our own city. This is the embodiment of apartheid policies and practices against our people in Jerusalem specifically and in Palestine more generally,” he told MEMO in an exclusive interview.

    I would recommend caution with any news story or website like the British website, Middle East Monitor. Newsguard.com, notes that the site fails to meet several basic standards of credibility and transparency such as: it fails to disclose it's ownership and financing, it presents editorials as news, its owner Daud Abdullah signed a public declaration of support for Hamas in 2009 which the British government lists as a terrorist organization since 2001, and the site promotes Jewish conspiracy theories. In 2011, a BBC News report referred to MiddleEastMonitor.com as a pro-Hamas publication in reference to its hosting of Raed Salah, an Israeli-Arab sheikh who has invoked conspiracy theories about Jewish complicity in the September 11, 2001 terror attacks.

    Indeed, the current unsubstantiated story about Jews poisoning Archbishop Theodosios in Jerusalem is a perfect example of using anti-semitic tropes posing as news.

By me if any man enter in he shall be saved, and shall go in and out and find pasture." - John 10:9 At every parish where I have had the pleasure of attending services, there is always a small group of people who find their way all the way up to the church building but don't actually attend services. At one parish it was a group of male gypsies who talked on cellphones or smoked cigarettes. At another it was a few Protestant husbands who, though they never attended services, opened the parish doors for people as they filed in. At yet another parish the men stood in the narthex and chatted until it was time to receive and then got in line. Latin or Greek Catholic, Eastern or Oriental Orthodox I see the same small throng of men standing next to the front door, but not standing, sitting, or kneeling amongst the people.
