Is the male-only priesthood a discipline or essential to the nature of being a priest? Sr. Vassa (again unflinchingly taking up a contentious topic by climbing up the ladder to the highest platform and then jumping into the deep end head first) dives right in and says there is no reason beyond personal preference to not have female clergy. You know, when people ask me about women in priesthood, they say, 'Sister, why can't women be priests?' And I say, 'Women CAN be priests. We don't WANT them to be priests.' Because you see, God can do anything, and the Church, by divine authority, uh, can do anything, but, the Church doesn't want to - and that's a legitimate reason. What I don't like is when we TRY to pretend that there are other reasons for this, because it's legitimate not to want something, and there are reasons not to want this - right? - but, we shouldn't pretent that there's some... reason, that, for example, the maleness...
I sure hope they discuss the damage that was done by implementing the same virus mandates that the gov't implemented. Two things came out of church mandates.First,it scattered people to other jurisdictions.Second, people stop attending church.Livestreaming was another big mistake.
ReplyDeleteWhy not a priority of bringing the non canonical s onto the fold? Wouldn't Jesus go after the lost sheep? Shouldn't they?
ReplyDeleteIn principle, bringing back the non-canonical is a good idea, as long as the non-canonical people genuinely repent and wish to be a part of the canonical Orthodox church. What happened in Ukraine was a farce, because it involved ignoring the existing canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church to create a union of schismatic church bodies. The next step should have been to reunify the schismatics with Metropolitan Onuphry and the existing UOC, with any schismatic hierarchs and clergy repenting for going into schism and/or any other illegitimate acts committed while schismatic. After examination, any formerly non-canonical clergy who prove worthy can be regularized either by being ordained by a proper bishop, or by being received into the Church in the rank from which they left. If that process is followed, I have no problem with non-canonical parishes and jurisdictions coming back to the Church.
